The Heart of Homewood Plan is the branded name for the Downtown Homewood Master Plan. The study area for the plan is shown on the right.
With over 420 businesses in a walkable environment, downtown Homewood is one of the most vibrant and active downtown areas in the state of Alabama. The City seeks to attract more of this growth, while also maintaining the character of Downtown Homewood. The Heart of Homewood Plan will provide a road map to guide future growth and development in the heart of the city for the next 10-15 years.
This fresh look at Downtown Homewood will serve as a checkup, to assess with the community about what is currently working well in Downtown Homewood and what needs to change. The Plan will reflect a balance of ideas that seek to address the needs of tomorrow while simultaneously seeking to understand the necessary steps for growth today. This is an opportunity for city officials, property owners, business owners, residents and visitors to refine the vision for a successful Downtown Homewood.
The Heart of Homewood Plan will detail a realistic and community-based vision for future growth and redevelopment of downtown Homewood as it pertains to public and private development, streetscapes, open space, circulation, parking, transportation and future land use, character and density. The Plan will include both near and long-term project recommendations to help achieve the community's vision.
Who's working on the plan and How is the plan being funded?
The Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham (RPCGB) is under contract with the City of Homewood to develop the Heart of Homewood Plan.
The plan is being funding through the Building Communities Program, which is administered through the RPCGB. The program provides federal funding for 80% of the project cost, and the City of Homewood provides the local government match of 20% of the project cost.
